Tips from the Pros
By: Welsh Corgi Kennels
Q: Has there ever been a time when you could tell what a litter was going to be like?
A: Yes! A recent litter I bred were from two parents with the SOPs of 83, and I expected there to be all 83's, but to my surprise I got three 83's and an 84 (new SOP for LH Dachshunds)!!!
Q: Have you ever had a all perfect litter?
A: Yes, I have! A few times actually. My recent litter of Shorthair dachshunds were all perfect! I kept back the 3!
Q: If you got a dud litter, would you ever breed those two parents together again?
A: Umm, I would breed them once again, to see if it was really just a dud litter or if the dogs were no good. I bred Willowstar's Cherry bomb to Willowstar's Return to Eden for their first litter, and that was a dud litter, but I bred them once to again to see and the second litter produced the first 81 AND 82!!!
Q: Do you keep low SS puppies?
A: I will only keep a low SS puppy if the rest of the stats are perfect and the SOP is of good quality!
Q: What do you do with a champion that isn't placing anymore?
A: I stop entering them and just use them for breeding.
Q: Is it a good idea to just keep non-champion studs?
A: I have many non-champion studs that have produced beautiful puppies with perfect stats! So yeah, I think it all depends on the quality of the non-champion stud!
Q: How long should you keep a dog up for sale?
A: I keep my dogs up for sale for 15-25 days, if they're not sold by then, I FH them.
Q: When is it time to FH a brood?
A: I think it's when she becomes 120 days old. That's when I FH my broodies.
Q: What is your favorite dog that you bred?
A: My favorite is Willowstar's She is Superior. Because she is the first 84 LH doxie, her stats are perfect, and I am excited to see what her litters will look like!
Q: Is it okay to keep retired dogs around?
A: I think it is okay. I only retire a dog if they were a big part of my breeding program and I'm just not ready to say "goodbye" yet.
Q: When is feeding Old Boy okay?
A: Old Boy is equivalent to Old Roy or Pedigree. I think if you don't have a lot of money, and you're trying to save it's okay to feed Old Boy.. But if you have money, then you should want to feed your dogs the better of the food to get the best results in your dogs!
